LEWISTON, Maine — Bates sophomore Avril Dunleavy earned Second Team All-East honors, and head coach Rogan Connell was named EISA Alpine Co-Coach of the Year, as the Eastern Intercollegiate Skiing Association released its year-end awards on Sunday.
Connell, Bates’ 12th-year head coach, guided the Bates women’s alpine team through an outstanding EISA carnival season, which culminated with last weekend’s Bates Carnival and NCAA East Regional Championships. In five out of 11 officially scored carnival alpine events this season, the Bates women placed third on five occasions, and fourth two other times. Connell shares the award with Middlebury’s Abby Copeland.
Dunleavy (Salt Lake City, Utah) led the way for the team, with a whopping eight top-10 carnival event finishes out of a possible 12 en route to her second NCAA appearance in as many years. Dunleavy had a career-best fourth-place finish in the giant slalom at the Colby Carnival, but also four other top-six performances to her credit.
Bates Carnival/EISA Championships/NCAA East Regional
Our home carnival started off with what felt like the best weather of the year. We finally had sun and comfortable temps in the thirties. It was a great day to be racing at Sunday River on one of the most demanding GS hills of the season that saw run times of 80 seconds for the women and 75 seconds for the men.
Women's GS
The women were once again led by Avril Dunleavy '15 who finished 5th (Her 5th top-5 and 7th top-10 of the season). Katie Fitzpatrick '15 finished 16th and was followed by Emily Bamford '15 in 20th to put the women in 4th for the day. Zoe Livingston '13 finished 22nd in her last collegiate GS of her career.
Men's GS
The men had a respectable day with Chris Bradbury '16 finishing 38th (started 51st), Tanner Dirstine '16 finishing just behind in 39th (started 46th) and Cody Bullen '16 making a huge move up from the 75th start to finish 42nd.
Men's SL
Peter Cole '15 was the top finisher for the men in 35th, followed by Brent Talbott '14 in 39th and Devon Brown '14 in 42nd. Chris Bradbury had one of his better 1st runs of the season to make the flip for the second run but couldn't take advantage of his early start position and was a 2nd run DNF.
Women's SL
The ladies had a strong day to finish out the carnival season finishing 3rd as a group. Once again led by Avril in 6th, who finished in the top-10 in all races she finished. Katie Fitzpatrick was our second finisher in 9th. Emily Bamford was our third scorer in 16th. Anne Rockwell, Emily Hayes and Zoe Livingston finished om 25th, 27th and 33rd.
In addition to the races, the athletes, parents and alumni were treated to a number of great events. On Friday evening we had an awesome parent and athlete dinner hosted by Sunday River and the Bullen family at the Jordan Grand Hotel. On Saturday, Friends of Bates Athletics had a tent set up in the finish area with food and giveaways for all Bates supporters. It was also great to have Bates President Clayton Spencer out at Sunday River supporting the team and enjoying her first experience watching alpine ski racing. On Saturday night FBA also put together a reception for all of the Alpine and Nordic athletes, parents and alumni that were in attendance this weekend.

Middlebury Carnival and rescheduled Dartmouth SL
The Middlebury Carnival started off with slalom on Friday, a nice departure from the usual carnival schedule.
Slalom
Anne Rockwell '14 was the star of the day. Sitting 8th after first run, Anne put down the 4th fastest second run in rough deteriorating conditions to move up to 4th overall. Unfortunately it was a rough day for the rest of the women as Avril Dunleavy, Katie Fitzpatrick, Emily Hayes and Zoe Livingston were all first run DNFs. Emily Bamford was our second and only other finisher in 19th.
The men had an even tougher day as Tanner Dirstine was our only finisher 31st.
GS
Avril Dunleavy '15 led the women finishing 9th, her second Top-10 of the year in GS. Katie Fitzpatrick was 22nd and Anne Rockwell had her second best GS finish of her career in 25th.
It was another tough day for the guys as Chris Bradbury was our only qualifier for the second run. A huge mistake and a great recovery left him in 43rd overall.
Dartmouth SL Makeup race
The SL cancelled from the previous weekend was rescheduled for the Sunday after Middlebury. Once again we were hit by high winds and cold temps. As a result the lifts were closed and the athletes were towed behind a snowcat for their inspection and race runs.
Women
The day started off well for the ladies with Avril 6th, Anne 10th, Katie 20th and Emily Bamford 22nd after run one. On run two Avril slipped back a couple spots to finish 9th, continuing her streak of finishing in the top 10 in every race she's finished. Anne was a 2nd run DNF, while Katie and Emily moved up to 17th and 18th respectively. Zoe Livingston and Emily Hayes finished close behind in 21st and 24th.
Men
The struggles for the men continued as Tanner Dirstine was our only finisher in 44th.

Dartmouth Carnival
The Dartmouth carnival ended up being a battle with the weather. For the GS it was cold, snowy and windy as winter storm Nemo moved into the northeast. The SL was cancelled do to high winds.
GS Highlights
Men
Chris Bradbury put together two solid runs to finish 28 from bib 60. Tanner Dirstine was our second finisher in 31st. The remainder of the men unfortunately did not qualify for the second run.
Women
The first run went really for the women on a very turny GS for the Dartmouth Skiway. Avril Dunleavy was sitting in 7th, Emily Bamford 11th, Zoe Livingston 14th and Emily Hayes 18th. The set on run 2 was what we've come to expect at Dartmouth, straight and fast. Emily Hayes moved up a couple of spots to 16th. Zoe ended up 17th. Emily Bamford was having a very strong second run when a gust of wind kicked up creating a complete whiteout. Emily somehow managed to find her way through the bottom of the course but the damaged had been done and she slipped back to 25th. Avril was a second run DNF.

Colby Carnival
(Photos: Cory Ransom/EISA)
This past weekend was a very cold trip to Sugarloaf for the Colby Carnival. The women continued their strong skiing, while a pair of first-year men started to pick up the pace.
Friday GS
The women were led by Avril Dunleavy who came out of the 32nd start position in the first run to finish 9th. She followed that up with the 3rd fastest second run to finish 4th on the day, just over 3 tenths of a second off the podium. Our second scorer of the day was Katie Fitzpatrick with two solid runs to finish 15th. Anne Rockwell had one of her best GS performances of her career to finish 24th adding much need points after DNF's by Emily Hayes and Emily Bamford. Overall the women ended up 4th in tight race with UVM, Dartmouth and UNH. Also of note, sophomore Wes Warner got her first carival start in place of a sick Zoe Livingston.
The men didn't fare quite as well, but we finally saw the speed Tanner Dirstine is capable of in GS. Tanner went from a start of 40th to 23rd on the 1st run. Unfortunately Tanner hit some chatter in the flat afternoon light and lost a ski. Matt Perejda and Peter Cole were the only scorers for the men in 41st and 43rd. Chris Bradbury, Brent Talbott and Cody Bullen were all 1st run DNFs.
Saturday SL
The men showed some improvement in SL over the first two carnivals. Chris Bradbury and Tanner Dirstine finished 24th and 25th after excellent second runs from outside the flip. Peter Cole was our third scorer in 39th and Brent Talbott finished 45th. Cody Bullen was DNF and Matt Perejda did not qualify for the second run after a short hike..
With four women starting in the first seed, the team came out firing. Avril led things off starting 3rd and finishing 3rd in run 1, just .3 seconds out of the lead. Katie and Anne followed in the 8th and 9th start spots to finish 5th and 14th in the first run of the day. Emily Bamford our final first seed starter was 18th in morning after a small mistake. Emily Hayes was 23rd after run 1.
Going into the second run the women were sitting second, not far behind UVM. Unfortunately some small mistakes cost them, but the women were able to hang on for 3rd behind UVM and Dartmouth. Avril finished the day in 5th for her second top-5 of the weekend. Anne Rockwell had another good performance to finish 11th. Katie's bobble out of the start cost her and she slipped back to 16th, while Emily Hayes' great second run moved her up to 15th. Emily Bamford was a 2nd run DNF.
Overall on the weekend the combined Alpine and Nordic scoring put us in 5th. This weekend is an off weekend for Alpine while the Nordic team finishes off the UVM carnival. The following weekend we are off to Dartmouth.

St. Lawrence Carnival
This past weekend we made the long trek to Lake Placid for the St Lawrence Carnival. We again faced a variety of weather from frigid cold for the GS to warm weather for SL. St. Lawrence and the Whiteface race crew did a tremendous job with the races and provided us with the best conditions we've had for racing this year.
In the GS the women stepped it up dramatically from last weekends results. Emily Hayes who was sitting 17th after run 1 put down a great second run to lead the team finishing 8th. Emily Bamford was right behind her in 9th. Zoe Livingston rounded out the scoring in 30th. Unfortunately Avril Dunleavy who was sitting 6th after run 1, lost a ski on the second run. Still the women finished 3rd on the day and had a great chance to be second if Avril made it through clean.
The men's GS race saw very tight racing with the top-30 separated by just over two seconds after the first run. Tanner Dirstine and Chris Bradbury finished 31st and 32nd after run one, just missing the flip. Both of them put down good second runs but with out the advantage of being in the flip the second run they ended up finishing 30th and 33rd. Cody Bullen was the third scorer in 55th.
Saturday arrived with much warmer temps for the SL, but the snow stayed firm thanks to the previous days sub-zero temps. The men raced first and unfortunately did not take advantage of the good conditions with 5 of 6 either a DNF or DSQ. Tanner was the lone finisher for the men in 34th.
The women had another strong day finishing 3rd behind UVM and Dartmouth for the third race in a row going back to last weekend. Avril led the charge in 5th. Emily Bamford was next in 13th with the 7th fastest second run and Katie Fitzpatrick completed the scoring in 15th. Anne Rockwell skied to a solid 17th. Emily Hayes had a mistake filled day to finish 28th. Zoe Livingston finished 32nd.
Next up we travel to Sugarloaf for the Colby Carnival.

Next up we travel to Sugarloaf for the Colby Carnival.
UVM Carnival
The carnival season began with the alpine portion of the UVM Carnival. The alpine races were moved up from their usual early February spot on the calendar to accommodate a large number of racers going to February NorAms in Vail.
The weekend started off with great weather and snow conditions for the GS. Leading the women was Emily Bamford in 19th. She was followed by Katie Fitzpatrick in 21st and Emily Hayes in 29th. As a group they finished 7th, which was definitely not what we were looking for but still a solid start to the season.
The men were led by Chris Bradbury in 25th, a great finish out of the 62nd start position. Tanner Dirstine was our next scorer in 39th and Cody Bullen was our final scorer in 43rd.
After the races the team was treated to a wonderful dinner at the home of Randy Hoder (Class of 1983). The team enjoyed a great meal and some time relaxing by the fire.
The weather changed dramatically overnight. We arrived in the morning to a hill that was shrouded in fog and had been softened by overnight rain. This made for very tough conditions that saw more than half the men's field DNF or hike. Ryan Symancek battled through the tough conditions to finish 23rd. Tanner and Chris who both hiked the first run were our next two finishers in 29th and 30th.
The snow for the women's race was just as challenging but the ladies did a great job handling the conditions. Avril Dunleavy led the team in 7th place. She was followed by Anne Rockwell in 10th, Katie Fitzpatrick in 13th, Emily Hayes in 17th and Emily Bamford in 18th. Overall the women finished 3rd in the SL just behind UVM and Dartmouth.
After the alpine portion of the races Bates sits in 8th place. The Nordic events take place the first weekend in February and hopefully they can move us up a few notches.
